Plans for New Sheffield Casino Approved
Tue 20 Dec
Sheffield residents will soon have a new leisure and entertainment option as plans to turn the former head quarters of National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) into a 24 hour casino have been approved.
The building on Holly Street opened in 1988 but stood derelict for a number of years after the NUM moved head quarters and was under threat of demolition in 2006 when it was branded the building "out of character" by planning officers.
Brook Leisure, one is the largest independent late night operators in the country, had submitted an application to turn the building into a 24 hour entertainment venue which will feature a 38,000 sq ft casino with two restaurants and a rooftop bar.
Work on the proposed casino will start in spring and the 24 hour entertainment venue is expected to open in early 2013. The project is expected to create about 130 jobs.
Andrew Stevens from Brook Leisure said Sheffield was the only UK city not to have a central casino and the Council Planning Committee agree that a new casino could help revitalise the area around Sheffield City Hall.
At the moment casinos in Sheffield include G Casino on Duchess Road and two Napoleon Casinos: Ecllesall Casino and Napoleons Owlerton Casino.
