Sitting on the River Soar close to the edge of the National Forest is the city of Leicester, the main city in the county of Leicestershire and the 10th most populated settlement in England.

The origins of Leicester date back to Roman times and the city began to expand over the years as a market town before it underwent drastic urban development at the time of the Industrial Revolution.

As a result, Leicester became a powerful economic centre during the 1800s and the settlement continued to expand achieving city status in 1919.

Today, Leicester is a major student city with Leicester University and De Monfort University calling the city home. It is also very ethnically diverse and many of the city's residents have their origins in South Asia and the Asian Sub-continent.

Every year, the city attracts large numbers of visitors who come to attend the numerous parades and festivals Leicester has including Pride Parade, the UK's second largest Caribbean carnival, the biggest Diwali celebrations to be found outside of India and the Leicester Comedy Festival, the biggest in the United Kingdom.

As you would expect from any city with two major universities and a large student population, Leicester's nightlife scene is thriving.

Leicester has a large selection of pubs, bars and clubs and popular spots include Revolution, The Glass House, Liquid & Envy, r/bar, Mosh and Zanzibar.

Leicester also has a choice of three casinos: Electric Circus Casino, Gala Casino and Mint Casino.

Mint Casino on East Bond Street opens seven days a week from 10am and stays open until 6am. Electronic slots and roulette are available from 10 and live gaming - blackjack, American roulette and three-card poker - is permitted from 11.

The bar opens from 12 serving drinks and food until 5am and every first and last Thursday of the month is complimentary curry night.

Electric Circus Casino on Cank Street is open seven days a week closing at 9pm every night. Electronic slots and electronic roulette is the name of the game at Electric Circus. The casino also has a bar which is accessible at all times while the casino is open.

The third and final Leicester casino, Gala Casino, is on Highcross Street and opens 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

American roulette, cash game poker, three-card poker, dice magic and blackjack are all available and Gala also offers 'casino magic' where new players can learn the ropes.

Food is available around the clock at the chargrill restaurant, while those looking for a drink can satisfy their needs at the 18 degrees Below Ice Bar or the Epernay Champagne Bar.
